Netflix's The Sandman Heading to Blu-ray and DVD, Special Features Unveiled

Ahead of the show’s return, all eleven episodes of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman Season 1 will be released on digital, 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD.

Warner Bros. Television officially announced the digital and physical media release dates for The Sandman Season 1 after over a year since its Netflix debut.

Per Comic Book Movie, The Sandman: The Complete First Season will be available to purchase digitally on Sept. 18, followed by its 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release on Nov. 28 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. The home video release will include two special features including a behind-the-scenes sneak peek and a featurette about The World of The Endless. When it made its debut in Aug. 2022, the fantasy series received positive reviews from critics and fans alike, leading it to become one of Netflix’s most-watched original shows during its first seven weeks.

Based on Neil Gaiman’s popular Vertigo comic book series, The Sandman follows the story of Morpheus/ Dream, a godlike being who gets held captive for more than a hundred years by an occult leader. After escaping from his prison, he finds that his once prosperous kingdom of magic and dreams is now in shambles. Season 1 sees Morpheus reclaiming his power by hunting down the important items he had lost during the period of his captivity.

The Sandman Season 2 May Return With a New Release Format

After the Season 2 renewal of The Sandman was confirmed, Netflix executive Peter Friedlander confirmed their plans to change the show’s episode release format in future installments. It's highly possible that Season 2 would follow the same release strategy as Stranger Things Season 4 and The Witcher Season 3, where episodes will drop in batches. Currently, production on The Sandman Season 2 has been temporarily suspended due to the ongoing Hollywood strikes. Prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, filming had actually started in the UK, as set photos of Tom Sturridge’s return surfaced online.

In Season 1, viewers were able to meet three of Morpheus’ Endless siblings including Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park), and Despair (Donna Preston). Gaiman previously confirmed that the next installment will also finally feature the rest of Dream’s powerful siblings Delirium, Destruction and Destiny, whose castings have yet to be revealed. Delirium will reportedly play a central role in Season 2, as it has been rumored that the "Brief Lives" arc from the comics will be one of the storylines that might get adapted into the new season.

Besides Morpheus’ siblings, a recent report suggests that The Sandman Season 2 is looking to introduce five new characters in the form of Norse gods Thor, Loki, and Odin, as well as fairy rulers King Auberon and Queen Titania. These characters' potential inclusion seemingly hints at the other comic book storylines that the creative team are planning to cover in Season 2 including the "Season of the Mists" arc.
