Samantha Jones’ Sex And The City Return After 13 Years Confirms A Harsh Reality For The Reboot

The anticipated return of Samantha Jones in The Sex And The City reboot, And Just Like That, was disappointing, a common theme of the spinoff series.

The much-anticipated return of Samantha Jones in And Just Like That's season 2 finale wasn't enough to revive the Sex and the City reboot, confirming a harsh reality for the show. The spinoff series, which aired its first season in December 2021, has proven over two seasons that sometimes it's best not to mess with a good thing. Sex and the City, which spanned six seasons from 1998 to 2004, was a culturally groundbreaking series ahead of its time in depicting female sexual freedom. The series reboot has been a continual letdown, lacking the charm and comedy that made the original so beloved.

And Just Like That season 2 attempted to revive the series by rehashing old storylines and relationships, including bringing back Carrie's romance with Aiden (John Corbett), her Sex and the City ex-flame. Unfortunately, the show offers little to fans of the original series beyond nostalgia. The plot feels disjointed, and the characters lack the charisma that once made them enjoyable to watch. The current series also feels incomplete, missing a vital cast member, Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall). Samantha's absence makes it difficult for audiences to connect to the series, given that she was such an integral part of the show.

And Just Like That's Season 2 Finale Proves Not Even Samantha Can Save SATC's Reboot

And Just Like That's season 2 finale opens with Kim Cattrall's brief cameo as Samantha Jones, a fan favorite and original cast member. Carrie receives an unexpected phone call from Samantha, who was planning to surprise her with a trip to her farewell dinner but was stuck in London when her flight got delayed. Samantha asks to be put on speakerphone so she can say goodbye to Carrie's old apartment, and she does so with a British accent (the series has Samantha living in London). The scene feels disingenuous and rushed, a real letdown to the fans who sat through the entire second season awaiting Samantha's return.

Kim Cattrall's Sex And The City Return Creates Further Disappointment For And Just Like That Season 3

Given the rocky history and rumors surrounding Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker's feud, Samantha Jones' absence from And Just Like That is no surprise. Due to the heightened tension between the actresses, the cameo scene had to be filmed as a phone call, as they refused to be in the same room. And Just LikeThat was renewed by Max for a third season, which was announced this week. Fans hoped Samantha's return would be longer-lived, but after the finale, it is clear that Samantha's 80-second cameo was a one-time thing, and she will not be returning for the next season.

The Sex and the City reboot has received mixed, but the overall consensus is that the show is aimless and disappointing to longtime fans of the original series. And Just Like That season 2 notably improved from the first season but still failed to live up to audience expectations. The characters appear underdeveloped and one-dimensional, which is disappointing because there is some genuine talent among the cast if only the script contained more depth. Storylines often feel forced and contrived in their attempts to stay up on current cultural trends and buzzwords. If Samantha's appearance is any indication, there will still be much to be desired in season 3.
