From: Season 3: Everything We Know So Far About the Horror Mystery Series

As credits rolled on season two of From, fanatics knew not to discount a third season of this horror masterpiece, and we'll spill the beans!

Garnering passionate responses on both sides of the fence, From has provoked a veritable wildfire in certain circles of horror and spook-fest culture. Traditionalists that consume mainstream scary movies (like 2023's Scream VI) don't appreciate From's ether-steeped, incomprehensible mythology. Other horror enthusiasts embrace From's challenging, thinking person's style of immersive terror. Unconventional. Unorthodox. Unpredictable. Some have even claimed that From is nigh "impenetrable". But will From turn out to be one of the best 25 shows right now?

We'll take a look at what's happened before and draw logical conclusions to forecast what will happen next on this incredibly unpredictable show!

The Wrath of Cucuy

Taken from an ancient Romanian gypsy word meaning "boogeyman" or "demon," the term 'Cucuy' is often repeated in From. However, the fascinating thing about this penultimate horror series is that it never actually explains the meaning of 'Cucuy.' As a matter of fact, aside from the demonic ghost children growling the word repeatedly, the characters within the series itself never seem to hear it (or if they do – they don't acknowledge it). Is this perhaps a clue in and of itself? Why would a phrase that loosely means "Evil" be uttered by demonic entities over and over, yet no in-canon character ever mentions it? It leads to some questions. Do the prisoners of the abandoned town not hear it, or are they intentionally choosing not to acknowledge this strange phrase?

Season one of From scored a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is something any viewer can certify as 'fresh,' proving the franchise a viable commodity for the home-terror fan community. Yet, even as credits rolled on From season two, devotees knew not to discount a third season of this nearly impenetrable frightful masterpiece! For now, it's time to give up the goods on the knowns, unknowns, and possible plot points in the upcoming season.

Welcome to the Mycelial Network

After the nightmare-like ending sequence of season two, viewers believed the entirety of the first two seasons to have been some bizarre dream or, perhaps, a drug-induced hallucination. Not so. These people are trapped in an actual physical location accessible only through the radioactive Mycelial Network of trees.

The Mycelial spore inter-relational flora network is a plant-based consciousness that spans the entirety of Earth. What this means is that spores, small plants, large trees, bacteria, fungi, and everything in between can communicate with each other. Now, by communication, it isn't meant that they speak – but trees can gather their collective moisture and resources to send to another tree, perhaps separated by hundreds or even thousands of miles, if that tree is under distress by invading insects or floral disease. Why does this matter?

Within the context of From, there is a tendency to be subtly obsessed with trees. Indeed, seemingly every other episode of season one featured the developmentally challenged Victor meticulously recording tree density, growth, and perimeter. What no other character in From seems to notice is that Victor isn't happy about it. The trees keep changing: species, leaf density, and even location. Yet no matter how much Victor complains about it, nobody else seems to care, and no one seems to fathom why Victor is so obsessed with the trees.

The reason is that the sickly, supernatural forest which has surrounded and supplanted the denizens of From is the portal entry point. Trees? Has MovieWeb gone crazy, crazier, or craziest? Nay. The fact is the stranded, unnamed town in From is the victim of what ancient magic practitioners termed "ley portals."

The elder celts, druids, and Wiccans believed that the Earth was permeated by powerful magnetic fields which could transport unsuspecting travelers to another place – even another time! Sound far-fetched? When logic and reason are applied to the understanding that there's a breed of seagrass that has reached 20,000 years old, it's easy to see why our ancient ancestors believed in the superhuman, God-like power of trees and plants.

If these same trees had been bombarded with radioactive material – such as was released during the original Atomic bomb testing – it would be possible for such a portal to remain open permanently. Sound like the most insane answer possible? Wrong again! Almost this same subtle sub-plot was prominently displayed in David Lynch's supernatural work: The Twin Peaks Series.

Indeed, it wasn't until season 3 (termed 'The Return' by Showtime), 25 years after the initial pilot viewers learned the town of Twin Peaks had been haunted by an opening to a darker world, the world of the Lodges, which was ripped open by the first atomic test. There was even an evil that was released into our world from this alternate dimension – the notorious 'Bob.'

In From, enthusiasts note characters from the late 40s 'Americana,' such as butchers, bakers, milkmen, and librarians. Why this particular time frame? Because it reflects America's nuclear future, and the test town in From was bathed in radioactivity while simultaneously blasted into another reality entirely.

Where Do We Go 'From' Here?

Due to the ongoing strikes picketing Hollywood, from the WGA and AFTRA to SAG, many die-hard fanatics wonder when the answers will appear in From. Will any of us ever get a clear answer from From? Enthusiasts can take a deep breath because – yes – it's officially been announced (as of July 23) that From has been renewed for a third season on MGM+ and is set for a tentative 2024 release date.

Will Sheriff Boyd successfully navigate the confusing terrain in the upcoming series? Do the ancient cannibals of From have any other weakness besides becoming infected by worms? What of the dreaming deaths? From season 3 is now expected to begin filming soon, in November 2023, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and will wrap up in April 2024. For further clues to the future, rewatch From on Starz and MGM+.
