How Gal Gadot's Heart of Stone Sets Up a Sequel

Netflix sets up a couple angles a sequel can go in for Heart of Stone as Gal Gadot's Rachel Stone tries to save the world with her super spy team.

It's no secret that Hollywood, as well as streaming services, love spy series. It's evident from the plethora of James Bond, Jason Bourne and Ethan Hunt movies. Not to mention, Apple TV+ has gotten in on the act with Citadel, while Netflix has turned Extraction into a franchise.

Netflix also has The Gray Man, and is now telling the story of Gal Gadot's Rachel Stone in Heart of Stone. Here, Stone is seen trying to stop a rogue MI6 agent from destroying the world using a deadly quantum computer: the Heart. Thankfully, she ends up bringing the villains down and saving the day. But as is the norm with these kinds of films, avenues are opened up for a sequel now that Stone's crew is a bit more vulnerable.

Heart of Stone 2 Can Focus on the Two Kings

Stone had her teammate, Parker (played by Jamie Dornan) turn on her, steal the Heart and try to kill operatives in the real agency Stone worked for: the Charter. Parker felt this independent group was evil, so he took out a couple of the superiors, known as Kings. However, two more Kings from the "deck" remain. While they'd be glad that Stone saved their agency, there'd still be tension. That's because Stone is now working with Alia Bhatt's Keya, a hacker who lost loved ones like Parker to the Charter.

This can create problems, with the Kings not trusting Keya for being Parker's former ally. Or with Keya possibly willing to switch sides again to take them out. The catalyst for this is already built into the story, as the Kings believe in using the Heart in a cold, robotic manner to kill. Stone has promised Keya to be more human about how they use the tool, but there's a chance conflict can arise if the Kings think the new direction is running them soft. This can easily create a civil war, giving Stone and Keya new perspectives on where their allegiances should stand, who they should trust, and if they're truly free.

Heart of Stone 2 Can Focus on Parker's Rogues

Parker made it clear there were others like him in the rogue cell who lost people to a Charter that claimed to kill in the name of good. It's a classic war and politics story, which is why Stone knows her group isn't safe. Sure, she killed Parker in Heart of Stone's ending, but this now sets the stage for the rest of rogues to come after the Charter. The group has finally been exposed, which is what Parker's team wanted all along.

There's no telling if Parker corrupted the Heart while he had it, which can easily create a backdoor for his people to worm in to and get revenge. It would help them control the Heart, gaining access to cameras, financial institutions and weapons worldwide to enact mass genocide. Plus, it would allow them to finish off the Charter once and for all. Seeing as Keya would be considered a traitor, it would add extra emotive weight to the story, affirming Heart of Stone is indeed a new Mission: Impossible with Stone being the female version of Ethan. Ultimately, it's a natural direction with a familiar enemy that Stone knows won't stop hunting her pack, all while Stone ponders if she's on the right side of this moral and ethical divide.
