Mortal Kombat 2 Teases Fans With New Logo as Film Production Begins

Mortal Kombat is revving up for its second round in theaters. James Wan is wearing the producer's hat and recently shared a glimpse into the production of Mortal Kombat 2. Wan took to Instagram to share a backstage photo, featuring a clapperboard embossed with the sequel's logo and a fierce dragon wrapped around the Roman numeral II. The word “Fight” aptly captioned the post, signaling that the battle for Earthrealm is far from over as per CBR.

Mortal Kombat 2’s production kicked off in June. Warner Bros. gave the go signal for the sequel despite the lukewarm reception of its predecessor. The team seems to have taken the criticism constructively. Producer Todd Garner asserted on Twitter that they are committed to making the sequel surpass the original by learning from past mistakes.

Now, let’s talk about the meat of any Mortal Kombat game or movie – the characters. The sequel promises an expanded cast with a blend of iconic characters and fresh faces. Karl Urban, whose impeccable portrayal of characters in The Lord of the Rings and Thor: Ragnarok has left fans spellbound, will play the fan-favorite Johnny Cage. Cage, the ever-cocky actor-turned-fighter, is likely to bring a swagger that could lighten up the movie’s intense battles.

Joining him will be a stellar ensemble including Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Adeline Rudolph as Katana, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, and many more. Not to mention the returning warriors from the first movie, including Lewis Tan as Cole Young and Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade.

The director's chair will again be occupied by Simon McQuoid, who seems to be carving a niche for himself in this franchise, as the Mortal Kombat movies are his only directorial credits so far. The script is being crafted by Jeremy Slater. He has worked on the likes of Moon Knight and The Umbrella Academy.

Fans Await a Story-Driven Mortal Kombat Sequel

Mortal Kombat fans are expecting the upcoming sequel to have a deeper and compelling story. Garner has already promised the fans that they will deliver substance behind the bone-crunching fight scenes. The expectation is not unwarranted as Mortal Kombat creators Ed Boon and John Tobias made sure that the games have rich lore behind them.

Picking up from where the first movie left off, Shang Tsung was banished from Earthrealm by Raiden, setting the stage for a renewed conflict. The stakes are high as Earthrealm's warriors must train for the upcoming Mortal Kombat tournament and recruit more allies to fend off the menacing Outworld.

The sequel also hints at the arrival of Johnny Cage. Cage’s inclusion has surely sent the fandom into frenzy.

The anticipation for Mortal Kombat 2 is starting to build up. However, there are no announcements of its official release date yet. In the meantime, fans who want to catch up or revisit the first installment, it’s available for streaming on HBO Max.
