Ted Lasso Season 3 Is the 'End For Now,' Says Director

Ted Lasso director says the series might be over following Season 3 but hints at more to come.

Ted Lasso Season 3 director Declan Lowney opened up about what appears to be the final season and what fans can expect.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lowney talked about directing the last two episodes of the football comedy and what fans can expect in the future with Ted Lasso. When asked whether the final episodes felt like the end of the series, Lowney responded: “Everybody knew it was the end, but it’s also the end for now. (Laughs.) It’s going to be two or three years before anything happens — if anything happens — so let’s try and tie up all these stories properly. I’m trying to remember how the script was delivered, because I’ve a feeling I might have gotten a big chunk of it, and then there’d be more coming — but I didn’t know how much more yet. I was like, ‘There’s a lot of tying up to do!’ And then Jason [Sudeikis] gave me the remaining pages and it was like, ‘Ah! That’s what he’s doing here.’”

Lowney shared insights into potential spin-offs, revealing that Ted Lasso's lead, Jason Sudeikis, envisioned a three-season storyline. However, he also hinted at broader possibilities for the series. The official Apple TV account on X added to the intrigue by posting an image featuring Coach Beard, played by Brendan Hunt, Roy Kent played by Brett Goldstein, and Nate Shelley, played by Nick Mohammed with the intriguing caption "hinting at possibilities." Mohammed subsequently shared the post on his account, using a zipped-mouth emoji to suggest a concealed aspect he must remain silent about. The third season concluded with Ted's return to the US, Roy taking over as AFC Richmond's new manager, Beard continuing as the assistant coach, and Nate resuming his role as the assistant to the kit man. The prospect of a new series delving into the trio's experiences after Ted's departure is uncertain at this point.

Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Juno Temple's performances in Ted Lasso have been widely praised by critics. The sports-comedy series has been a hit for Apple TV+ since its debut on August 14, 2020. The premiere season also made history as the most nominated first-season comedy in Emmy Award history with 20 nods. The third season, which featured 12 episodes, concluded on March 15, 2023.

Ted Lasso Wouldn't Be Revisited Until at Least 2025

It is unclear in which direction Apple TV+ will continue the successful Ted Lasso franchise; however, Lowney suggested that fans will have to wait until 2025 before there is any spin-off or continuation of the series. However, he also mentioned that he was not privy to discussions about the series' future which went down with the producers Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly.
