Dead Reckoning Part One Pushes Mission: Impossible Franchise to New Milestone
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One's latest box-office achievement helps the spy thriller franchise reach a new mark.
Thanks to reaching another pivotal box-office mark, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One pushes the titular action franchise to new heights with its cumulative gross.
Per The Numbers, Dead Reckoning Part One's worldwide box-office tally of $552 million has helped the Mission: Impossible film series topple the $4 billion mark in overall ticket sales. The total gross for the Mission: Impossible franchise stands at $4.128 billion since its inception with the original 1996 movie.
Dead Reckoning Part One eclipsed the $550 million mark this past weekend, making it the fourth-highest-earning film of the seven installments released to date. Released in North America on Jul. 12, Dead Reckoning Part One is still well off 2018's Fallout for the top spot on the franchise box-office list, with Fallout making over $791 million. Domestically, Dead Reckoning Part One is worse for wear, sitting sixth among Mission: Impossible's seven entries at $168 million, only above 2006's Mission: Impossible III.
Dead Reckoning Part One Is a Hit With Critics and Fans
Once again starring Tom Cruise as the adventure-loving IMF operative leader, Ethan Hunt, Dead Reckoning Part One has been well-received, with many calling it one of the franchise's best movies and earning the film series' second-highest Rotten Tomatoes score to date with a 96% critical rating. The film also featured some of Cruise's most outrageous stunts including his much-talked-about motorcycle stunt off a cliff to him fighting Esai Morales' villainous character, Gabriel, aboard a fast-moving train.
Despite the enticing action and rave reviews, Dead Reckoning Part One's box-office returns have been somewhat underwhelming given the movie's high expenses, taking $291 million to make, a franchise record. As a result, the film stands to attract a huge financial loss for Paramount Pictures. The Christopher McQuarrie-helmed movie hasn't been helped by the stiff competition with Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, with both titles considerably outdoing it at the box office, with Barbie on track to become 2023's highest-grossing effort with $1.34 billion made while Oppenheimer stands at $777 million globally. That said, Dead Reckoning Part One could receive a late boost as it could return to IMAX cinemas following the extended run of "Barbenheimer."
Cruise stands to make a solid payday from Dead Reckoning Part One despite its slow box-office momentum, earning a $12-$14 million base salary as well as a portion of the movie's ticket sales. Cruise stars in Dead Reckoning Part One alongside Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Henry Czerny, Pom Klementieff and the above-mentioned Morales.
