Alice Cooper Says Johnny Depp, Amber Heard Trial Was 'So Blown Out of Proportion'
Alice Cooper says he "never watched a moment" of the trials, suggesting the legal battle shouldn't have been televised to begin with.
Alice Cooper addressed how the highly-publicized defamation trial involving pal Johnny Depp didn't affect Hollywood Vampires' touring plans, and in fact, the singer feels the whole ordeal has been very much blown out of proportion.
Last year, Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard were involved in a bitter trial with the former lovers suing one another for alleged defamation. The trial lasted six weeks, during which time it had been televised and streamed online throughout the entire process. The situation was recently recapped in a Netflix docuseries that drew high viewership, suggesting a degree of continued interest in the legal battle. However, one person who didn't care at all to watch the trial was Cooper, who tells Vulture in a new interview that he doesn't feel it should have been televised to begin with.
When asked if the allegations against Depp caused any "hesitancy" to bring the actor on tour, Cooper responded, "Not at all. If you talk to Johnny about it, it was something that happened. He was just like, 'Yeah, yeah, what’s the next song?' For Johnny, it was one of those things where … you can’t say it got blown out of proportion, but I don’t know why they would televise the proceedings, right? It’s because of the fame of both people."
Alice Cooper Didn't Feel the Need to Watch the Trial
Cooper then shared how he joked to Depp that he could remake War of the Roses with Heard, but that was pretty much all the two have said to one another about the trial since it's been over. In fact, Cooper notes how it doesn't come up at all between them on their current tour, as nobody truly cares enough about it anymore to even discuss it. That includes Cooper himself, who said he was confident from the start that Depp would come out victorious, leaving him with no real reason to tune in to the televised trial.
"I don’t think it was ever mentioned on the tour because nobody cared," Cooper explained. "I never watched a moment of the trials. It was so blown out of proportion. It was such a Hollywood thing. I knew Johnny was gonna win because how many people have other exes literally on their side testifying for him? That never happens. I turned it right off and said, 'Well, you know, Johnny will weather this storm and when he’s onstage, he’s our guitar player.'”
Depp and Cooper can be seen on stage through their Hollywood Vampires tour. More information can be found at the group's official website.
