Everything New In Marvel Snap's PC Version
Marvel Snap's official Steam release has finally arrived after months of anticipation and hype — but how is it different from the previous PC version?
Marvel Snap continues to thrive and improve all the time, but on top of the Big In Japan season, August 2023 will forever be remembered for Marvel Snap's official launch on Steam. Until now, Marvel Snap was a mobile game that could be played on the PC, but it just felt like a mobile port and not its own polished entity.
Now, Marvel Snap's Steam version delivers a new realm of excitement to this online card game, and a more enticing package for newcomers interested in joining the Marvel Snap community. While plenty has been kept the same in terms of how it fits on the screen, its presentation is a serious improvement, giving PC players plenty of new stuff to enjoy moving forward.
The old Marvel Snap PC version was essentially just a mobile port. The game simply had a lifeless background to support the action in the very center of the screen. It couldn't even function the same ways the mobile version could, even though point and click is often a nicer fit for this type of game.
The old vertical UI of Marvel Snap had to go, because the game really needed to differentiate between the mobile and PC versions to move attract new players. The old PC version was played as a convenience for Marvel Snap players who weren't restricted to playing on the move, giving them benefit of playing on a bigger screen.
Marvel Snap's New Menu Embraces Widescreen UI
Marvel Snap's new interface and widescreen UI is a much-needed breath of fresh air for the PC version. The Main Menu immediately hammers home how vital good presentation is for any good game. This new-look UI fills empty space with worthwhile features, and now players can view and click-on completed missions from the Main Menu. A mobile game has to cram everything into a smaller interface, but this new set-up looks much more professional and easy to navigate.
The Play button, deck name, and rank number are all in the same place as before, but everything else has been pushed out wide. This lets the PC version on Steam utilize the space, all while keeping the Marvel Snap title art in the very center. This is just the start of how Marvel Snap's Steam version shows off its new widescreen UI.
Games Look Much Better
On the mobile and old PC versions of Marvel Snap, the games felt lifeless besides the cards being played. Animations and sounds can only do so much. The new Steam version has a vast spacey setting in the background, making the combat and card interactions in the center feel more epic and more impactful.
The Energy and Cube numbers even feel lost in their previous positions, thanks to the vast space left by the widescreen version. While this could be deemed as a negative thing in having so much space to fill, this isn't an issue for most players. In fact, many players make use of Untapped.gg, which acts as an additional assist for players. It tells them what cards have been played by both players, are still in the deck, and how many have been destroyed or discarded. For these players, the widescreen space is being used up. Yet the new dynamic background and widescreen aesthetic is still a welcome addition.
Widescreen Just Makes Everything Look Better
While there are still plenty of tabs and features in the new Steam version of Marvel Snap that use a mobile-like portion in the center of the screen, the Collection Level tab fully utilizes the widescreen aesthetic. This difference is not groundbreaking when compared to some of the other improvements, but having the Spotlight Cache information at the side is a simple yet efficient use of space.
However, Second Dinner still needs to make some general adjustments to make Collector's Reserves better in terms of the rewards they give. However, from a stylistic point of view, this screen finally looks good on PC.
Smaller Windows Do Still Have A Place In Marvel Snap
Marvel Snap's brand-new Steam edition embraces widescreen as often as it can, but the smaller windows of old still remain for specific tabs. However, they now seem dynamic and not just like a waste of screen space. This additional windows pops out of the screen, letting players look through their News, Ranked Rewards or Shop on a more concentrated level.
These particular sections don't need to utilize widescreen, and have been presented in an acceptable way. News in particular was temperamental on the previous PC form, forcing players to resort to the mobile version, or just go straight to the Marvel Snap website to get information. This polish making the new PC version feel seamless and more satisfying.
Card Upgrading Has Leveled Up
The streamlining of card upgrading had already been improved prior to the PC launch, but it deserves to be highlighted and celebrated. Players can now scroll through the layers of card quality and upgrade to that point if they have enough credits and boosters. Before this change, players had to go through the painstakingly slow process of upgrading one tier at a time.
This meant players were forced to visit the Collection Level page and then go back to do it all over again. Upgrading cards is the main way to progress through Collection Levels and unlock more of Marvel Snap's goodies in cards and other collectibles. The Steam PC version of Marvel Snap makes this a quicker and easier process, which is in everybody's best interest.
Searching Through Cards Is Now Even More Sophisticated
The mobile and old PC versions of Marvel Snap gave players a base level of filtering through their own cards, but the Steam version has taken things to a whole new level. The screen space that widescreen provides lets players toggle the size of the cards they are flicking through, meaning that more of the smaller cards can fit on screen at once. Players have always been able to filter by Energy, Power, archetype or card name, but now they can even search by variant type.
Variants are rightfully getting more of a focus now in Marvel Snap, as they were previously just tied to extortionate prices. Now, players can directly search for the finest work from some of the best artists out there, just as long as the players have them. Unobtained cards can be seen thanks to a new filter, but this doesn't yet include variants. That element will undoubtedly be rectified somewhere down the line.
