Why Insidious: The Red Door Director is a 'Very Personal' Project for Patrick Wilson
Insidious: The Red Door's Patrick Wilson unpacks what motivated him to direct the hotly anticipated supernatural horror sequel.
Insidious: The Red Door director Patrick Wilson recently opened up about why the fifth installment in the Insidious horror franchise was a "very personal" project for him.
Wilson, who also reprises the role of Josh Lambert in Insidious: The Red Door, unpacked the motivation behind his decision to make his directorial debut with the film in an interview with Looper. "It made sense," he said. "Rarely do you get the opportunity for your first one out of the gate to be a film that you could craft to your own personal liking, themes that you wanted to explore, with producers that I know very well, that their track record is amazing in this space -- you knew that the film would be taken care of. There's also safety in that it's the fifth movie of a franchise. You're like, 'When does a fifth movie reignite a franchise?' Or, 'When can you push it forward? How do you make it interesting?' The answer is, 'Go for it.' That's what they said."
"They knew I had such respect for the first two [Insidious movies]... respect for all the films, but the two that I was in, I wanted to bookend [them]," Wilson continued. "I wanted to ask the question of, 'What happens at the end of the second film? What does that do to people?' They let me explore and make it very personal. That way, there's a real safety in that -- because regardless of the success of the film or who likes it [or] doesn't like it, it's truthful. It's my movie. It's the story that I wanted to tell." Wilson's comments come after he recently admitted that he was initially unsure whether he was comfortable following in the footsteps of original Insidious director James Wan.
Will Patrick Wilson Star in Another Insidious Movie?
In the same interview, Wilson also made it clear that Insidious: The Red Door will be his last entry in the franchise for the foreseeable future. The star insisted that he and co-star Rose Byrne (who plays Josh Lambert's wife, Renai) "close our door" on the overarching Insidious narrative with The Red Door, although he added that this didn't necessarily mean that additional entries won't happen without them. On the contrary, Wilson suggested that Josh's son, Dalton (Ty Simpkins), could carry the story forward, noting that Insidious has the potential to be "like the Boyhood of horror movies."
Whether that will actually happen remains uncertain for now, though. Producer Jason Blum recently announced that the franchise will take "a very long rest" following the release of The Red Door, calling into question the likelihood of a sixth Insidious outing getting the green light any time soon.
Insidious: The Red Door is in cinemas now.
