What to Expect in Record of Ragnarok, Season 2 Pt. 2

As Record of Ragnarok resumes its second season, there's a ton of drama to come, including some fighters switching sides to complicate the contest.

Netflix's Record of Ragnarok has certainly kept fans guessing as to what'll be the outcome of the war between gods and Earth's champions. Zeus and his pantheon are trying to reach seven wins first in a contest of 13 brutal fights. If they do, they'll be able to destroy the planet and punish its denizens for being petulant and ungrateful.

However, the shonen anime tournament has Brunhilde using Valkyrie souls to power up her warriors to fight on Earth's behalf. Unfortunately, the sumo expert, Raiden, losing to Lord Shiva makes it three wins to two for the gods, portending doom and gloom. That said, key twists and turns have been teased, offering a glimmer of hope for humanity. With that in mind, let's dive into what fans can expect when Season 2 resumes.

Record of Ragnarok Has Buddha Battling Zerofuku

The Record of Ragnarok Season 2, Part 2 trailer shows Buddha battling Zerofuku in another intense affair. Fans were shocked at the end of Part 1 when Buddha defected to humanity's side. Granted, he was once human himself and saw their immature ways, but it's really because he has faith they could turn things around with a second chance. More so, he hates the pride shown by the gods and how quick they are to judge.

Season 2 can continue this battle of philosophy in and out the gladiator arena. Buddha is poised to show the gods what hypocrites they've been -- something he desperately wants to do. It won't be easy in the fight, though. Zerofuku is the God of Misfortune, formed when the Seven Lucky Gods join forces. This makes Zerofuku even more powerful, not to mention the being is ticked off that Buddha was the one who helped Brunhilde hatch her scheme.

Zerofuku will undoubtedly want Buddha dead, and to prove to Zeus the gods should show no mercy to the other side. Zerofuku hates conniving folks, after all. It promises an unforgiving duel to come, with the trailer hinting the peace faring Buddha won't be holding back as well. Interestingly, Zerofuku does seem to be underestimating Buddha -- something the seven deities did when they met him backstage. However, from the way Zeus begged Buddha to enter the fray and fight for the gods, knowing he's a walking weapon of mass destruction, it's apparent Buddha will be a key tipping point. How Zeus reacts to the betrayal, though, remains to be seen.

Record of Ragnarok Teases a Vulnerable Brunhilde

Now, what's most shocking is how Brunhilde has no problem bonding her sisters' souls to the Record of Ragnarok fighters. It's the process known as the Völundr, where they become divine weapons and accessories to power up Earth's brawlers even more. But once these soldiers die, the Valkyrie souls dissipate into nothingness with them. There's no Valhalla, which is breaking Brunhilde mentally as the shonen anime death-matches occur.

To make it worse, Göll, the youngest of the bunch, is growing traumatized seeing these sacrifices made. She's watched three of her sisters die, with Brunhilde taking note how it's affecting the kid. Brunhilde's already retreated to her quarters in tears, shifting her from the angry, unflappable character first seen. Season 2, Part 2 will have to steel her up once more because she knows she can't waver from the mission.

Still, it teases conflict with a Göll who doesn't want any more Valkyries to disappear. It requires Brunhilde to be more meticulous and stringent in how she plans the chessboard. It'll be intriguing seeing her fight her own emotional maelstrom within, because she is coming off more human. Yet she won't want to seem flawed for the gods to exploit. They love capitalizing and one wrong move on her roster selection could see them gain the upper-hand even more. It leaves fans wondering how she'll react moving forward, especially knowing she and Göll may end up having to fight with a champion, too.

Record of Ragnarok May Have a Civil War

Admittedly, the rules have some loopholes that can be exploited. It's why Buddha could defect as a former human, abandoning a Zeus who had no clue he'd become this wildcard. This could see others opt to play for the other team if Buddha's doctrines start spreading. Or worse, some may not want to fight. Shiva's already told the gods he respects and loves mankind, planting the seed for others to think twice. The Raiden fight reminded him of humanity's spirit, and why compassion, empathy and love are needed as solutions, not more war. Some may even throw fights to help level the score. That's how unpredictable the anime is at present.

Hermes is also another god Zeus can't trust so Part 2 is poised to explore who else is on Brunhilde's team in secret. If there are more sympathizers, a civil war could take place. This can even bring champions like Kojiro Sasaki back into play, as he's willing to defend gods who are honorable and just. It hints at a lot of drama to come, with the intriguing possibility of the teams getting mixed up at this point -- something Jack the Ripper has hinted at as well by eyeing a switch to the gods. It would fit the overall narrative, however, because even Zeus can tell that by casting judgment so quickly on a rotten Earth, he's upset the order and has both sides questioning their fates.

It leaves viewers eager to see if he will try to patch the rift and get folks to recant. The problem is, with infighting to come, there'll be mass casualties and collateral damage due to everyone being so hot-headed. It'll be interesting to see how Zeus is eventually swayed and which mission he sticks to. He knows unity is the key, whether it's to destroy Earth, or if the decision arises to form a peacetime pact with the enemy. Either way, Record of Ragnarok is going to be more layered, complex and nuance as the battle royale anime continues to detail if the gods are bloodthirsty enough to follow through. And ultimately, if Earth's chosen ones can indeed shock everyone -- with or without defectors -- and pull off the biggest victory of their lives to save their realm from total annihilation.
