James Gunn Confirms It Was His Idea to Introduce [SPOILER] in Vol. 3

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn confirms that it was his idea to introduce a popular cosmic hero in the post-credits scene.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn clarifies who came up with the idea to introduce a fan-favorite cosmic hero in the threequel's post-credits scene.

On his personal Threads account, the filmmaker responded to a question regarding the inclusion of Phyla-Vell in the movie, confirming that it was ultimately his call. "I don't recall Marvel having any requests," Gunn wrote. The reveal of the character took many comic book fans by surprise given her storied life in Marvel's fictional universe as the daughter of Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel. While it's currently unknown how she'll function in the cinematic universe going forward, audiences noticed that she seemingly has similar powers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Carol Danvers. It remains unknown whether this will be addressed in a future project.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 served as Gunn's final contribution to the MCU, tying up the saga of the titular heroes and culminating in the original team disbanding to embark on their personal journeys. The post-credits scene confirmed that while the first iteration of the group may no longer be together, a new Guardians team has taken over in an effort to protect those that need it. This new unit consists of Rocket Raccoon, a monolithic Groot, Phyla-Vell, Adam Warlock, Cosmo and Kraglin. While Marvel Studios has confirmed that Peter Quill aka Star-Lord will return, it remains to be seen whether this new team will show up again in the future.

Star-Lord Alone

Gunn has briefly spoken about what a solo Star-Lord movie could look like, noting that both he and actor Chris Pratt have often spoken about what it would be like for the character to try to fit in with modern Earth customs after so many years. "We always want to give somebody a little something special," Gunn said. "And Chris [Pratt, Star-Lord's actor] and I, forever, have talked about how great it would be to be able to do a Legendary Star-Lord movie, a story with Star-Lord on Earth trying to adapt to the environment of Earth in the same way that somebody else might try to adapt to the alien environment of outer space. He's a fish out of water in just kind of regular water. So I can't wait to see it."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now streaming on Disney+.
